Dr. Nader Engheta

Dr. Nader Engheta is the H. Nedwill Ramsey Professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. His current research activities span a broad range of areas including metamaterials and plasmonics, nanooptics and nanophotonics, graphene metamaterials and graphene optics, one-way flow of photons and electrons, bio-inspired sensing and imaging, miniaturized antennas and nanoantennas, physics and reverse-engineering of polarization vision in nature, mathematics of fractional operators, and physics of fields and waves phenomena.


Dr. NABIL H. FARHAT

Dr. Farhat is interested in qualitative theory of nonlinear dynamics, bifurcation and chaos and its application to the modeling and understanding of cortical dynamics. This encompasses corticonics (echoing electronics), neural networks; complexity, and dynamical computing with diverse attractors, the role of synchronization, bifurcation, and chaos in computing and encryption; holographic models of cortical information processing; biomorphic and bifurcation networks for feature extraction, feature binding and cognition; hardware (optoelectronic) implementation of bifurcation processing elements and networks. Image understanding and neuromorphic signal processing; remote sensing and automated object and radar target recognition.


Andreou Lab @ John Hopkins Univ.

This is the Sensory Communication and Microsystems Laboratory in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Johns Hopkins University.

Andreou Lab's research examines the relationship between information, and its physical representation in both biological and in engineered information processing systems. They study new ways of transforming and communicating information that exploit physical properties of the underlying technologies; from integrated circuit design principles that rely on the non-linear characteristics of CMOS devices, to high speed serial wireless communication between chips and silicon on sapphire CMOS circuits, to micromechanical structures for acoustic processing and 3D CMOS technology. They also explore unique and innovative methods to acquire data and extract information making use of a-priori known physical properties of the problem; from engineering single chip integrated polarization imagers to compensating for speaker variability and statistical signal processing in speech recognition through vocal tract normalization. At a more fundamental level, we employ elements of communication and information theory, to analyze, establish quantitative and relevant measures for performance and engineer closed loop sensor/motor systems, at different scales, macro to micro and nano.


LIRA @ Univ. Genoa - Sandini

LIRA-Lab (Laboratorio Integrato di Robotica Avanzata) Laboratory for Integrated Advanced Robotics operates in the Department of Communication, Computer and Systems Science (DIST) of the University of Genova.

The main research theme is artificial vision and sensory-motor coordination from a computational neuroscience perspective. The goal is to understand how the brain of living systems transforms sensory input into motor and cognitive functions by implementing physical models of sensorimotor behaviors. Research activity is carried out around a number of experimental setups allowing experimentation with humanoid robots as well as basic research on artificial vision and robot control. The staff is composed of persons with permanent positions and students at the doctoral, graduate and undergraduate level as well as visiting scientists from inside and outside Italy.
